Welcome...
Previous Band Members Page

Here we have the guys and dames that have passed through the revolving door of Mud & Butter.  Well to be fair there's only one entry and hopefully there won't be too many more forthcoming, but due to the contribution of Mr. McGowan to the Mud & Butter experience we thought he deserved a wee tribute.  Here's to you Sticks........

Band Lineups
May - September 2005

The first lineup of the band in it's classic three piece format was:

Vocals, guitars:     Michael Strain
Saxs, vocals:        Fiona Garvie
Drums, hustling:   Stephen McGowan

In this period the band played residencies in both Bar Budda (St. Vincent street) and Icon (Candleriggs), a flying start for a band who had only formed two weeks prior to their first gig!

Gigs flooded in for the band, a lot of legwork and huckstering provided by the formidable banter of Sticks McGowan, so much so that work was being turned down.  However, all good things come to an end, and due to "proper job" commitments, Stephen was forced to resign at the end of the Summer.

The farewell gig for McGowan was a double occassion with Michael's birthday, held  in Icon.  The afternoon was really swingin' and the atmosphere mixed upbeat humour with a twinge of melancholy.  Luckily, the gig was recorded for posterity and may available in some format soon.  The highlight being the snippet of Quincy thrown into the Shakedown, punctuated by uproarous laughter from the drum seat.

          STEPHEN McGOWAN

Aside from Mud & Butter, Stephen McGowan has been the longstanding drummer of established Glasgow blues band The Blues Buddahs since 1999 and this, coupled with his love for the music, means he is a drummer with feeling and presence. The blues lies beneath every facet of his playing -  from an all out swing to lacanic after hours groove.  Now with the law after him (well, law degree) McGowan is cutting back on the jazz, but may be seen frequenting the local juke joints on occassion.
